The 92 portraits on this site come from the project's own source document, Indigenous Academic Firsts: Canadian Universities — Indigenous Canadian Academic Milestones & Pioneers: A Timeline. They are reproduced here as the source supplies them. Historical photographs are never colourised: the site shows them in a monochrome treatment until a reader hovers or focuses one.

3 of the images in the source are generic silhouettes rather than a photograph of the person they sit beside. For those people the site shows an initials tile instead, so a photograph is never displayed under the wrong name.

The rights log for the source images is still open: 92 portraits are recorded as pending and are published from the project's own document. Each one is logged with the person it belongs to, so that a licence, a credit line or a replacement can be recorded for it. Nothing has been published from any outside collection.

Typefaces

Text is set in BC Sans, the open typeface of the Province of British Columbia, published under the SIL Open Font License. Fraunces, the display serif, is published under the same licence. Both are subset to the characters this site uses and are served from this site, not from a font CDN.

Software

The site is built with Astro, TypeScript, and GSAP for motion. Images are optimised at build time with sharp. Search is indexed by Pagefind. All are open source.
