Mission

The Indigenius Canada project shines a bright light on centuries of brilliant leadership, academic excellence, and significant intellectual contributions by Indigenous Canadians. Far too often, mainstream history overlooks the profound impact that Indigenous scholars and scientists have on modern academia and global innovation. This initiative is dedicated to correcting that narrative by actively identifying, celebrating, and preserving the remarkable scholarly milestones and accomplishments of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis thinkers. By honoring this rich legacy of intellect and ingenuity, Indigenius Canada aims to inspire future generations to claim their rightful space in higher education and continue shaping the global academic landscape.

The Indigenous CIRCLE effort

This project is part of the Indigenous CIRCLE effort. Its aim is to highlight the accomplishments of Indigenous scientists and scholars and present them as role models for young Indigenous students.

Where the facts come from

Every fact on this site comes from the project's source documents: a timeline table of 136 milestones covering 95 people, 160 years and 50 institutions; 33 full biographies; and a numbered list of 94 references. Nothing has been added from anywhere else. The Scope & Methodology page says exactly how the list was compiled and what the source notes mean.

Indigenous review

An Indigenous advisory and review group will approve the design, the copy and the handling of sensitive content before launch. The group has not yet been named, so nothing here has been reviewed by it yet.

A note on independence

The project lead's family appears several times in the list of pioneers: David S. Wishart, William "Bill" Wishart, Vernon Wishart and Ian Wishart. Their entries follow the same inclusion criteria as every other entry, and they are disclosed here so that readers can judge the list for themselves. The independent Indigenous review group will review these entries before launch.

Corrections

This is a living document. If a name is misspelled, a year is wrong, a Nation is recorded incorrectly, or a photograph is the wrong person's, please tell us. Corrections are made in the source pipeline, so they survive the next rebuild.
